Fire at Baltimore Lumberyard Closes Highway and Schools
Lumberyard Fire Disrupts Baltimore Community #
A fire erupted at a city-run lumberyard in Baltimore on Thursday evening, intensifying into Friday. Consequently, classes were canceled at two nearby schools, and sections of a highway and light rail were closed.
Strong winds complicated firefighting efforts as multiple blazes challenged response teams throughout the day. “We are beginning to see favorable results and we are beginning to gain the upper hand,” noted authorities late at night. Despite progress, the fire remained uncontrolled, and firefighters anticipated continuing efforts into the following day.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and evacuations were deemed unnecessary. Two schools, about a mile from the fire, were not directly threatened. The blaze began near Camp Small, located five miles northwest of downtown Baltimore in a wooded area near light-rail tracks and Interstate 83, which temporarily closed within the city.
Over 100 firefighters responded to what was classified as a three-alarm fire, battling flames that were fueled by wind among a large pile of logs. As night fell, dramatic scenes of tall flames against the smoky sky unfolded, with reports of drivers witnessing the fire’s proximity as they passed by. “I have not encountered this type of fire at this size before,” revealed fire department officials.
